Depression
Depression and its symptoms are real. Women are at least twice as likely to experience an episode of major depression as men. However, historical mistrust makes seeking help more difficult for the Black populace. Stigma and judgment often keep Black people from seeking treatment for their mental illnesses as they do not want to be labeled as “crazy” within their community. We all go through difficult moments in life, but depression is more than that. A constant and persistent sadness, feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, emptiness, fatigue, loss of interest, loss of appetite, physical ailments (headaches), anger and frustration does not have to be an accepted part of your being.
Depression affects your entire person from your mood, behavior, body and thoughts. Psychotherapy can help. Understanding what you are experiencing and what it means is empowering. One of the many issues psychotherapy can help with is changing both negative thought processes and behaviors that contribute to depression symptoms leading to positive mental health and wellness.
